At work or at home, the most heavily used part of any property is the floor! Flooring is the one piece of any property that – as long as there are people in the business – is always heavily used. In most spaces, though, the floor is among the most neglected assets. After years of hard wear, many floors become slippery or crack under years of stress. Of course when this happens, maintenance is unavoidable. Epoxy Flooring is a common option chosen by both home owners and business operators to extend the useful life of their floor space.

An effective way to refresh and refinish floor space is through the use of epoxy flooring materials. In basements, garages and especially in industrial and warehouse space, these refinishing compounds are used more and more frequently.

Color is another reason homeowners and warehouse operators choose to refinish using epoxy floor coating. Of course one’s garage space is a personal statement and as part of a home environment, can add value to the property. Warehouse operators usually choose a color for safety reasons. Colors that easily reveal spilled material or help workers avoid accidents are usually selected.

What are the major considerations in selecting product or material with which to refinish floor space? Only two main considerations arise in this decision. In short, the material should be OSHA compliant and be of a “Polyaspartic” composition.

Gaining OSHA approval is not an easy process. Safety factors for OSHA approved flooring material is usually based on a coefficient of friction for both dry and wet conditions. Those materials with highly rated test results receive approval. Accordingly, those purchasing OSHA approved products can be reasonably assured that the product is of good quality and will provide years of service when applied properly.

“Polyaspartics” is a term used to describe the latest in floor coating materials. This type of compound is 100% UV proof and cures very quickly – usually in less than four hours. Industrial clients find this particularly attractive as warehouse space need not be taken out of service for an extended period of time.

Specialized training is usually required of those that handle this material on a regular basis. Although some home project entrepreneurs will attempt installation themselves, most will seek experienced contractors to do the job. Securing professional help when working with these compounds is insurance that the job will be done well.

Professional installation requires a contractor that has experience handling difficult materials as well as the ability to work around existing fixtures and equipment. Contractors with experience in the industry usually have the manpower to make the process run quickly – even when working to refinish large areas. Good contractors will provide for good ventilation during the installation process as well. As epoxy and polyaspartic materials are not commonly handled materials, contractors with experience can decrease the risk of improper application.

Good research into proper floor material can make the difference between a floor surface that wears well and provides years of service life.
