The importance of running background checks on tenants cannot be avoided if you are a landlord. The fact is, you want to make sure that you are leasing your premises, regardless of what it is, to upstanding citizens.

and it is not uncommon for a landlord to live in the same building that a unit is being rented out. Obviously, this would make it more interesting and more important to you because you are concerned of your own safety. Without knowing a little bit about potential tenants, it’s quite easy to rent your unit to some seedy characters. That would probably be something you’d want to avoid.

You obviously don’t want to invite trouble close to you, whether you live in the building or not. Even if you don’t live there, trouble will arise if you are renting your place to shady characters. But, we cannot see exactly who is a shady character unless we run a background check on them.

When one is under way, the results will show everything you need to see about them. Of course, you don’t have to be harsh in your judgment. Take a look at the facts and then go buy your instincts. The fact is, all people make mistakes, but a good educated decision is what needs to be made here.

Without doing one, it is simply negligence on your part. If they are hard criminals, then you will be endangering other tenants that are living on the premises as well. That wouldn’t be fair to them. Take for example pedophiles. This is especially true if you have young children living in the building, where you could be potentially putting them into unnecessary risk.

Most people would. So, do your investigations, do your research to give you the assurance you need, knowing you have done everything in your power to surround yourself and your other tenants with good people that will not harm others.
