Many people do not wish to think about what will happen when they get older. But, it is a fact of life. If you wish to live long and enjoy it, you will age. Around the world, countries are establishing many ways to help their aging populations, and there are as many plans as there are countries. For you alone, your best bet to plan for your own aged care is to plan for it in advance.
Planning ahead may be the most frustrating term you have ever heard when it comes to planning for aged care. Unfortunately, there is no on definitive answer for doing it properly, because everyone ages differently. Once you also consider the wide range of unfortunate circumstances that befall people as they age, dealing with it early seems impossible.
There are, however, a few universal steps that everyone may take to try to prepare for their care. Top of the list is to spend time in family discussion making it clear to everyone what your ideal aged care might be and how you may be able to have it. Your family will be much less confused about what you expect if you just talk it over with them. Rather than leaving them wondering because you do not want to worry them, include them in meaningful discussions about possible illnesses and death.
Discussion should include serious questions. Make certain your caregivers know where your will is kept, and you be certain that you have it kept current, and safe. Tell them who is designated as the executor of your will, and if there are copies. Discuss with your family and friends your wishes for end of life decisions.
Set up an advanced directive and have it ready in the event you suffer a catastrophic illness, but do not die. Designate people to be responsible for you if the need arises. Write it all down in legal documents to protect yourself and your family.
Some of the most important legal documents you must have in place are your birth, marriage, and divorce certificates. Your care giver must know your medical benefits information and your medication needs. Your will and power of attorney paperwork must be notarized and kept current. Your house paperwork and financial documents should be in order. Your passport of proof of citizenship must be available. You should attempt to make your funeral arrangements in advance, or put into place finances and instructions for these things. This is a good starting list.
If your wish is to remain at home, then you must make plans to do so. You should stay healthy by eating well, exercising regularly, staying alert with stimulating mental activities, and stay socially active outside of your home. Expect that your care needs may be much more than planned, and prepare your home accordingly. Bigger bathrooms, ramped entryways, wider doors, smooth flooring, and room to live on the main floor of your home, with extra space for other home health care devices, are some things you might wish to consider in a home remodel. Most people are unable to stay in their homes simply because their homes were not designed to allow wheelchairs to move freely about.
Your aged care may be complicated as you grow older if you become very ill. You may just need to find help with things you used to do yourself, or you may need full time nursing care. Whatever the case, the best way to be ready for it is to include your family in meaningful discussions now.
